JAMES RODRIGUEZ SET TO LEAVE MINNESOTA UNITED AS FREE AGENT AGAIN: COULD THE 2026 WORLD CUP BE HIS FINAL CHAPTER?

James RodrĂguez could be preparing for the final chapter of his professional career.
The Colombian playmaker is reportedly set to leave Minnesota United next week, with his short-term MLS contract expected to be terminated earlier than planned as he begins preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Colombia. According to reports from Pipe Sierra and multiple outlets, Rodríguez is also seriously considering retirement after the tournament, making this summer potentially the final act of one of South America’s most iconic football careers.

James originally joined Minnesota United in February 2026 on a contract running through June, with a club option to extend until December. The move was seen as a strategic decision: regain competitive rhythm, stay physically sharp, and prepare for what could be his final World Cup with the Colombian national team.

However, his MLS spell never truly took off.
Rodríguez made only a handful of appearances and struggled to establish real continuity in Minnesota. Reports suggest he featured in just four MLS league matches and remained largely unavailable during key stretches of the campaign, making the move far less impactful than initially expected.

Now, after Wednesday’s match against the Colorado Rapids, he is expected to leave the club and immediately join Colombia’s World Cup preparation camp. Minnesota reportedly had the option to extend his stay through the rest of the season, but that decision appears aligned with the player’s own long-term intentions.

And those intentions may point toward retirement.

At 34, James Rodríguez remains one of the most recognizable names in world football, but his club career in recent years has reflected instability more than continuity. Since his unforgettable 2014 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot and became one of the tournament’s defining stars, his journey has taken him through Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Everton, Al-Rayyan, Rayo Vallecano, León and now Minnesota.
While his club trajectory became increasingly unstable, his role with Colombia never disappeared.

For the national team, James has remained a leader, a symbol and often the emotional center of an entire generation. That is why the 2026 World Cup carries such significance. It is not simply another tournament — it may be the final international stage for a player whose legacy was built on football’s biggest stage.
Retiring after the World Cup would create a powerful sense of symmetry.

He announced himself to the world in Brazil in 2014. Ending his career after the 2026 tournament, hosted in North America, would close the circle exactly where his global legend began: under World Cup lights.

For Minnesota United, the move will be remembered as a short and underwhelming experiment. For James Rodríguez, however, MLS may have only been a bridge — not a destination.
The real objective was always Colombia.
Fitness. Rhythm. One final tournament.
Then perhaps goodbye.
Football rarely offers perfect endings, but James RodrĂguez now has the chance to write one.

And if this truly is his final dance, the 2026 World Cup may become one of the most emotional farewell stories of the tournament.
