FALCAO UNLEASHED: THE NIGHT HE DESTROYED VILLARREAL WITH A HISTORIC POKER
On April 28, 2011, at the Estádio do Dragão, FC Porto delivered one of the most iconic performances in Europa League history, crushing Villarreal 5-1 in the semi-final first leg.
At the heart of it all: Radamel Falcao, unstoppable and ruthless.
A BALANCED START
The game began at a high tempo.
Villarreal created the first big chance through Nilmar, before Hulk responded with a powerful low strike that went just wide of Diego López’s post.
Porto controlled possession and created multiple chances but failed to convert.
Against the run of play, Villarreal struck just before halftime: Cani, assisted by Nilmar, stunned the Dragão crowd (0-1).
At the time, an away goal was a huge advantage, giving the Spanish side the perfect scenario at the break.
THE TURNING POINT
Unbeaten in 12 matches, Porto came back with intensity.
The attacking trio Guarín – Falcao – Hulk raised the tempo immediately.
In the 49th minute, Falcao was played through by Freddy Guarín and brought down by Diego López.
Penalty.
Falcao calmly converted to equalize (1-1).
PORTO TAKE CONTROL
Momentum fully shifted.
61st minute:
Guarín saw his shot saved before scoring with a powerful header (2-1).
67th minute:
Hulk burst down the right and squared for Falcao, who finished clinically (3-1).
75th minute:
From a Guarín free-kick, Falcao rose highest to complete his hat-trick (4-1).
The Dragão was in full eruption, while Villarreal lost all structure.
A HISTORIC FOURTH GOAL
In the 90th minute, from a corner delivered by James Rodríguez, Falcao leaped above everyone to score his fourth goal of the night (5-1).
The Colombian left the pitch with the match ball after one of the greatest individual performances ever seen in the competition.
