BRUNO FERNANDES WINS FWA FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR: MANCHESTER UNITED CAPTAIN ENDS 15-YEAR WAIT

BRUNO FERNANDES WINS FWA FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR: MANCHESTER UNITED CAPTAIN ENDS 15-YEAR WAIT

Bruno Fernandes has officially been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Manchester United player to win the prestigious award since Wayne Rooney in 2010.

The announcement marks a major individual milestone for Fernandes and a symbolic moment for Manchester United during a season filled with transition, pressure and renewed ambition. For a club that has often struggled to find consistency in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, Bruno Fernandes has remained one of the few constants — and now English football journalists have officially recognised his influence.

Winning the FWA award is not simply about goals or assists. It reflects leadership, consistency, influence and impact across the entire season. Fernandes has embodied all four.

As captain of Manchester United, the Portuguese midfielder has once again carried enormous responsibility both creatively and emotionally. In matches where United needed control, he provided structure. In moments that required leadership, he delivered presence. And in the biggest games of the season, he consistently remained the player opponents feared most.

A SEASON OF LEADERSHIP, CONSISTENCY AND BIG MOMENTS

His numbers have once again been elite. Goals from midfield, decisive assists, progressive passing and relentless availability have made him the tactical heartbeat of Michael CARRICK side. But beyond the statistics, it is his mentality that has defined this campaign.

The stats are still crazy: 8 goals and 19 assists, just imagine!

This allowed Manchester United to secure their qualification for the Champions League.

There have been seasons where Bruno Fernandes divided opinion. Critics questioned his emotional reactions, his risk-taking and his visible frustration on the pitch. This season, however, those same traits have often been interpreted differently: as the visible standards of a player refusing mediocrity.

That shift matters.

At a club like Manchester United, leadership is judged differently. The captain is expected not only to perform, but to represent the identity of the institution. Fernandes has increasingly grown into that role, particularly during one of the club’s most demanding rebuilding periods.

Becoming the first United player since Wayne Rooney to win the FWA Footballer of the Year also highlights how rare elite individual recognition has become at Old Trafford over the past decade and a half. During that period, rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal have often dominated both trophies and awards.

Fernandes breaking that cycle sends a powerful message: Manchester United may still be rebuilding, but individual excellence has returned to the center of the project.

For supporters, this award also feels like validation. Since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020, Fernandes has often been the player carrying the emotional weight of the club’s expectations. Through managerial changes, squad instability and inconsistent results, he remained the reference point.

Now, he has one of English football’s most respected individual honours to show for it.

The FWA award does not guarantee trophies, but it reflects status. It confirms that Bruno Fernandes is no longer simply Manchester United’s best player — he is one of the defining players of the Premier League season.

For United, that is both a reward and a warning.
Because when your captain reaches this level of recognition, the next expectation is simple: the club must rise with him.
Bruno Fernandes has delivered.
Now Manchester United must do the same.
